History

Godfrey Gay had been a mining engineer until the age of 50 when he took major career change and stated up a timber yard on Armstrong Street.[1]

G.Gay & Co. was established in 1919 by Godfrey Gay. The business originally sold new and secondhand building supplies, timber and mining supplies. [2]

Legacy

Family

Edwin Gay (son) took over the business during the depression. Before that time he was a fitter and turner for a local foundry.[3] Edwin's son Jim joined the firm in 1956 at the age of 22. In 1977 Jim relocated the firm to Howitt Street, Wendouree. [4]
