TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.
Geelong Express.
Sir, — I am the mate of the man Brown, and he and I made the discovery of gold at the very edge of the water on Golden Point, in 1851. We pulled up a tuft of rushes from the edge of the creek, and found about 1 dwt of the precious metal. Brown and I immediately returned to Buninyong and reported our discovery to our parties, and because my party would not at that time shift their quarters, I, not sufficiently appreciating the value of my discovery, went away for employment to the Pyrenees. Brown’s (my mate’s) party went to Golden Point on receipt of our information, taking with them the first cradle for gold that was wrought on Ballarat. Please to report me to Mr Woodward, and request him to address to me as under. Yours, &c., Thomas L. Madgett Geelong, 1st April.[5]
