History

Harry Reed was born at Melbourne on 23 May 1899 and transferred to the Ballarat Orphanage from the Gordon Institute in Melbourne in 1909 along with his brother William Reed. Arthur Kenny of the Ballarat Orphanage was his guardian and authorised his World War One enlistment at the age of 18. [1]

Harry Reed (5100) embarked for Europe on 11 December 1917. He was gassed in France in July 1918, and was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty by holding off a strong enemy attack on wounded men in trenches until help arrived. [2]

Legacy

World War One service recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour.

A tree was planted for Harry Reed (5100) in the Ballarat Orphanage's Arthur Kenny Avenue of Honour.[3]
