Getting Started
Logging In
Creating your own account will allow you to edit pages on this wiki. It is quick and simple process to create your own account. Although it is not necessary to log in before viewing pages it is recommended and provides additional features.
Creating an Account
It is quick and simple to create a personal user account. Creating a user account means that you supply a username (your real name or a nickname) and a password. The system will reject a username that is already in use. A user account is created only once. You are then "logged in". The next time you log in, you supply your username again and demonstrate with the password that you are the same person. (Do not share your password with other people; this can allow them to misuse your account, which could lead to it being blocked.)
To create an account, select 'Log in' (top right of page) then click 'create an account'. You will need to provide a username and password, as well as answer a visual "captcha" test. Users with text, speech, or legacy browsers will be unable to create an account if they cannot view this captcha image.
Edits you make are recorded under your username. If you are not logged in your edits are labelled in page history with your IP address.
User accounts created recently will be "unified" (that is, accessible from all Wikimedia projects). An older, non-unified account can be unified at Special:MergeAccount; unified users can use that page to check the status of their unified account. Preferences are currently set independently on each wiki.
How to Login
Click on the Log in link at the top right of the page. You will then be prompted to enter your username and password. If you have not logged in before, you will need to use the link provided to create an account.
If you have trouble it may need to make sure your browser accepts cookies. Some browsers accept or reject cookies from individual sites; users of these should configure the browser to accept cookies from this wiki.
Logging Out
You can log out any time by clicking on the Log out link at the top right of the page. To prevent the browser from remembering your username and suggesting it to the next user of the computer, remember to delete the Wikipedia cookies in your browser's privacy settings. This is especially if you are using a public computer - you may want to delete all of the browser's recent history (Ctrl+Shift+Del in Firefox).
Your User page and User Talk Page
As a logged in user, you will be able to create your own user page and user talk page. When you are logged in, you will see your username displayed at the top right of the page. Click on this to get to your user page, which you can edit in the same way as any other wiki page.
It is good wiki protocol to write a little bit about yourself and your interests on the user page.
You also have a User talk page which can be accessed by clicking on the Talk link next to your username at the top right of the page. Other people may write messages in your user talk page by editing it, and you can respond.

When visitors to the Ballarat and District Industrial Heritage Project wiki are working their way through related entries, it is important that at every page they encounter the same style and format – one that is easy for them to read and easily skimmed for the information they sought to find in the first place. It would be impossible for one person to ensure that all of the entries maintain the same style and formatting; so the Editing Guide has been created to help all contributors assist in maintaining the professional appearance of the work.
With the exception of a few protected pages, every page has an "Edit" tab which allows you to edit the page you are looking at. You will be able to make corrections and add facts to articles. If you add information to an article, please provide references, because unreferenced facts may be removed. If the information comes from a family or local knowledge reference the source (ie personal conversation with John Bloggs, 4 June 2009)
Any time you edit a page, it is considered good etiquette to enter a explanation of your changes in the Edit summary box (located below the edit window). Your explanation can be quite short. For example, if you are making a spelling correction, you might just type "typo". Also, if the change you have made to a page is minor, such as correcting a spelling or grammar error, it's helpful if you check the box "This is a minor edit". (This box is only available if you have logged in.) For your sandbox edit, you probably want an edit summary such as "Testing".
You should always use the 'Show preview button'. After you've entered a change in the edit box for the sandbox, click the Show preview button instead of Save Page. This lets you to see what the page will look like after your edit, before you actually save. We all make mistakes; this feature helps you catch them before other people see them. Using Show Preview before saving also lets you try format changes and other edits without cluttering up the page history. Do not forget to save your edits after previewing, though!
Wiki Markup
- Italic text - Select the word/s you want italicized, click the second box above left (resulting in italic)
- Bold text - Select the word/s you want bolded, click the first box above left (resulting in bold)
- Linking to Another Page within this Wiki - Select the word/s you want linked to another wiki page, click the third box above (resulting in Name of page).
- Adding an Image - click onto the page where you want an image to appear, then click the 'embedded file' icon at the top of the screen. Replace 'example.jpg' with the relevant image file name and extension (resulting in something like [File:Phoenix.JPG]). Click the 'Upload file' located to the left of the screen then go to the relevant page view, click on the image data, and follow the instructions to upload the file from your computer.
- Adding a Map Site - Find the industrial heritage site on a map website. If using Google Maps find the site, then click 'Link' on the top right hand side. If using www.nearmap.com click the 'share' button on the top right had side. This will give you the correct web address to copy then paste into the Industrial Heritage Wiki page you are editing.
