Henry Ballantine
History
Private Henry Ballantine was born in Timor, his mother was Mary Ballantine, Timor. Henry worked as a miner before enlisting on the 24 May 1916, he was 19 years and 10 months. Upon enlisting, he was appointed to the 7th Battalion, stationed at Castlemaine. He embarked Australia 2 October 1916, arriving in Plymouth 26 October 1916. He served in France before disembarking for Australia on 16 January 1919, he was discharged 21 May 1919 Star medal, the British War Memorial medal and the Victory medal. [1]

On Wednesday 9th August the Bowenvale public Hall was well filled, when the citizens tendered a farewell to Private Henry Ballantine, who was home on final leave, and who will shortly sail for the front. Councillor J. Dillon presided, he referred to the great conflict that is going on in Europe. and in which our nation is involved, fighting for a righteous cause. He eulogized Private Ballantine's action in offering himself for his King and country and wished him a safe trip and a safe return. Mr. F. Wills also addressed the large gathering, and paid a very high tribute to the great work that is being done by those gallant Anzacs in this present struggle. He had known Private Ballantine from his youth, and he wished him every success, and trusted that he would have a safe trip, and that the day would not be far distant when they would as citizens have the pleasure of giving them a hearty welcome home.The The chairman, on behalf of the citizens of Bowenvale, presented a wristlet watch to Private Ballantine. Private Henry Ballantine, sent a letter to his mother, Mrs M Ballantine, saying that he was in an hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, he was suffering from septic poisoning, caused through a splinter from shrapnel shell. Private Ballantine received this in the knee in September last, but took no notice of it at the time. [3]
