Herbert J. Ratcliffe
History
Herbert James Rarcliffe was born in Geelong. He developed a beautiful baritone voice and decided to move to move to England and pursue advanced studies at the Royal Academy of Music. On 30 December 1914 Ratcliffe decided to forgo his studies and enlist for active service. With five years experience in Australian cadets, the military offered him a commission as a 2nd lieutenant. He was posted to 11th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers.[1]
Bert Ratcliffe died at Brighton, County of Sussex, on 09 May 1973. [2]
Legacy
World War One service recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour.
Family
Bert Ratcliffe was the youngest of the five sons born to William Ratcliffe and Elizabeth Frances Collins. The family moved from Geelong to Ballarat shortly after Bert's birth on 13 April 1888.[3]
