==History==

Herbert James Rarcliffe was born in Geelong. He developed a beautiful baritone voice and decided to move to move to England and pursue advanced studies at the Royal Academy of Music.
On 30 December 1914 Ratcliffe decided to forgo his studies and enlist for active service. With five years experience in Australian cadets, the military offered him a commission as a 2nd lieutenant.
