History

Herbert Rolfe was born in Birmingham, England. His father was cyclist John Rolfe. Herbert Rolfe was living and working in Bendigo before moving to Ballarat. He was a cycle builder and Motor Expert located at 30 Armstrong Street North, Ballarat in 1914. He advertised building bikes that surpass all other makes.[1]

He joined up for World War One service on 16 May 1916 aged 39 years and 8 months. At that time his occupation was an engineer, and he lived at 316 Doveton Street North, Ballarat. Suffering from Chrinic Bronchitus, Herbert Rolfe was discharged on 19 July 1917 medically unfit after the condition was agrivated by active service.[2]

Herbert Rolf was a Cycle Agent and Manufacturer at 30 Armstrong Street North.[3]


Legacy

The World War One service of Herbert Rolfe is recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour. Herbert Rolfe (2136) was a member of the 39th Battalion during World War One.[4]

Private Herbert Rolfe, a former well known racing cyclist, of Bendigo, is on a visit to the city. Private Rolfe enlisted early last year, and went to France, where after a couple of months in the trenches he was sent to hospital suffering from an acute attack of bronchitis. He was afterwards invalided home, and returned by a hospital ship recently. Private Rolfe is a married man with a family of seven children. His father, Mr. J. Rolfe, a former champion cyclist in Bendigo, is now residing in Western Australia.[7]
