Italian Gully

Italian Gully was a gold mining settlement in Victoria. It is about 6.7km south of Smythesdale.

The Hill above Italian Gully is Staffordshire Reef.[1]

Origin of the name

Around 1855 a party of Italians opened Italian Gully.[2]

In August 1859, the Star reported mining activities on a number of leads[3]

The Italian Gully Cricket Club challenged the Smythesdale Cricket Club to a match in November 1859.[9]

The tennis club at Italian Gully came second in its first season of competitions in 1914.[10]

Education

There was a state school at Italian Gully. On Empire Day 1915, 80 students took part in celebrations reported in the Ballarat Courier:

"The children of the State school to the number of about 80, saluted the Flag and gave three cheers for King and Empire. Mr C. Walker, accompanied by his son and Sergt. Nicholson, of Ballarat, motored out and assisted in the celebrations. A fine programme of patriotic addresses and songs by children was gone through. Mr Walker, Jun. gave an exhibition of bugle calls, and it was much appreciated. Cr Daniels, the mayor presided. In the afternoon the children wore treated to cakes and sweets. and had a very enjoyable time."[13]

(Mr. Charles Walker was President of the Scarsdale Old Boys' Association, and his son, Geoff, was a member of the Australian Cadets. They had also been at the Scarsdale Primary School earlier in the day.[14])

Gertrude Effie Vale was a teacher at Italian Gully State School.[15]
