The end was not unexpected by his family, as his condition recently had been such as to cause them, considerable anxiety. Previously he had managed the business for Mr Ruddock, and purchased it when Mr Ruddock retired. The deceased was a kindly, big-hearted man, but of a most unassuming dis position, and declined to take any part in public affairs. He was a member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge, and at one time was prominently associated with the Ballarat North Re creation Club. Mrs Reynolds is well known in Ballarat art circles, some of her pictures having been most favorably commented upon at recent exhibitions of the Ballarat Art Society. - BALLARAT ART STUDIO
- A FINE DISPLAY.
- Lovers of art ore very much interested just now in a display of of paintings and art works at Mr J. A. Reynolds’ of Sturt street. Mr Reynolds recently purchased the wall-paper and house-decorating depot until lately carried on by Mrs A. Ruddock, and with which, he has been oonnected far about 20 years, and he is now displaying in addition to his houste-decorating designs a number of pictures by Mrs Reynolds, a Victorian artist, who has successfully disposed of nimerous pictures in this State, and has exhibited and sold at the Victorian Artists' Exhibition. The paintings on view are all for sale, and are of a very high older of merit. Especially interesting to Ballarat residents will be two pro-depicting, the Wisteria Arch, and the Hawthorn drive at the Ballarat Gardens, in which the beauties of these two attractive specimens of landscape, gardening are very faithfully limned. Lovers of sea-scapes will find their tastes well catered for in some, very fine ' paintings of cliff and ocean. Under this category may be mentioned as specially hoe samples, a pastel painting of Point Lonsdale, with a lighthouse in the Devon fore-groand, and a picture of the Devon (Eng.) coast. The artist is to be greatly congratulated upon some of her still life studies especially with regard to flowers, ‘‘Golden Wattle", “Marguerite" and similar paintings being fine produc tions. By many people the old Dutch masters are very much admired, and Reynolds, who seems to have a partiality for the Dutch styles, includes in her exhibition some copies of the work of tho old artist Van Hare. An entirely new feature is the painting on oak panelling, a novelty which should become very popular. Such studies as that of the mountain duck, pigeon and parrot, where the bright plumage of the birds Shows out bravely on the dull oak, will be greatly appreciated. No description of those pictures would be complete without some mention of the animal studies, among which Highland Cattle" is particularly worthy of notice. Chief among the other art exhibits, apart from the pictures, are the fine imitations of old Egyptian pottery work, all made at the Ballarat potteries, in handsome designs of bronze, silver, green, and old gold, there are also some very handsome examples of copperwork at the studio including a pomegranate repousee tray, a plaque with a design of Australian gum leaves and the kookaburra; and a fire screen, representing an Australian bush fire. In the more commonplace realms of art may-be classed the variety of wall papers on view. Mr Reynolds is the sole agent in Ballarat for Sanderson's art wall papers and in his latest has secured some novel patterns including a diningroom or study paper, which looks more like embossed leather than paper. Altogether the exhibition is a striking one, and well, repays visit. The building itself has recently been renovated, and fitted up in the most up-to-date style.[6]
