J. W. Preston
History
James Wood Preston was born in Ballarat. As a 21 year old photographer he enlisted for Service during World War One, giving his father, James Preston of Rubicon Street Sebastopol, as his next of kin. Private James Wood Preston (4563) of the 58th Battalion No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station and transferred to the ambulance train on 22 July 1916, with a gunshot wound to the right eye. He rejoined his unit on 15 August 1916, only to be reported as missing in action on 24 November 1916. On 01 December he was reported killed in action on 22 November 1916 [1] on the Somme.
Legacy
The World War One service of J.W. Preston is recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour.
