James Kelly

James Kelly was the proprietor of the blacksmiths firm of Kelly and Preston, situated in Ballarat.

History

He was born in the Isle of Man in 1834, and educated there. At the age of fifteen he was apprenticed to the blacksmithing trade for five years with Thos. Levin, of Kirkmarown. In 1859, at the age of 25 he arrived in Victoria and at once proceeded to Ballarat, where he worked as a journeyman for several years.

In 1864, he established his firm Kelly and Preston.
