John Warren Glover was born in 1871, the third child of William Glover and Jane Watson Blight. He lived with his family at Sulky Gully, probably at the Waterloo Hotel.[1] In December 1886 the publican of the Waterloo Hotel was W. Glover.[2] John Glover studied Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1887 and 1888. He then studied Metallurgy & Assaying and Materia Medica in 1890. Photography was his subject of choice at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1902. [3]

John was most commonly known as Warren Glover. He was a an active member of the Christ Church Young Men's Club, Ballarat. As an early motor enthusiast, John Warren Glover used the new coach house built at his Webster Street property as a garage. He was an excellent photographer and an active member of the Gun Club.[4] [5]

Mining was John Glover's Career. He was highly involved with the Egerton Cyanide Works, and a number of other ventures.</ref> [6]

Family

John W. Glover was the eldest son of William Glover. John Warren married Jessie Todd on 07 December 1904 at Christ Church Pro-Cathedral, Ballarat.[7]

John Warren and Jessie Glover had six children: 1. William Allison B. 1906 2. John Warren B. 1907 3. Jessie Allison B. 1910 4. Margaret Allison B. 1912 5. Thomas Allison B. 1914 6. Isabelle Allison B. 1918.[8]

The two oldest sons were born at the home of Jessie's mother, 6 Dawson Street, Ballarat. Around 1907 a large brick house at 97 Webster Street was rented, then purchased from Robert Richardson. This had been the first brick fronted house built in Ballarat, by George Edward Finnis in 1866. The Glovers names their house 'Balderton' after the English town in County Newark, home of J. Warren Glover's parent. Extensive building works were undertaken with the addition of a dining, billiard and living rooms, bathroom and kitchen. The last 4 children were born at 'Balderton'. A weatherboard 'white house' which had been at the back of the old house, including kitchen and bathroom, was moved back forty feet, and used from recreational purposed, including a darkroom set up in the old bathroom. A detached three room, fully equipped laboratory, and brick coach house, stable and saddle room were built. [9]
