World War One service recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour and the Ballarat Woollen Mills Avenue of Honour.
Obituary
- John Hewitson Smythe was the eldest son of John Smyth of Symonds Street, Queenscliff, formerly of Ballarat and Broomfield. The deceased soldier, who was in his 20th year, was born at Broomfield, where his father and grandfather were prominently associated with the various mines in the district. On moving to Ballarat the subject of this notice found employment at the Sunnyside Woollen Mill, and later at Bryant's bakery; and he entered as a student at the Ballarat Technical Art School, where he displayed considerable promise. He left Ballarat with the 39th Battalion, and was later transferred to the 40th Battalion.[1]
