John Holst was born at Sebastopol, Victoria. [1]
Legacy
John Holst (1560) enlisted for service during World War One on 15 October 1914. At that time he was a 34 year old farmer. John's next of kin was Arnold Holst of 202 Windermere Street, Ballarat. [2] His service is recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour, and the Rubicon Street Sunday School Honor Roll.
He was discharged on 06 September 1916 after contracting Pulmonary Tuberculosis at Gallipoli in May 1915. He died on 12 February 1917. [3]

- OBITUARY Mr J. HOLST. - General regret was expressed yesterday when it was learned that, Mr Jack Holst. brother of Mr F. W. Holst, of the Ballarat and Melbourne Stock Exchange, had passed away.- The deceased was invalided home from the Front some time ago, and did not make the progress hoped for. In the early stages of the war he enlisted, and he went through the Gallipoli campaign, the privations of which made such inroads into his health the the best of attention failed to restore him. He died yesterday morning at his sister's residence, in Winder mere street. Jack Holst was well-known in cricketing circles in Ballarat. Prior to going to South Africa some years ago he played Sunday school cricket., and on his return he became associated with the Sebastopol Club in the District competition. He was a valuable all-round player, and a most reliable member, as he was very keen an the game. He represented the Sebastopol Club in a Ballarat eleven against a visiting team. He was very popular with all cricketers, as he was a thorough sport.[4]
