John M. Kline
Background
John Matthias Kline was born at Smythesdale in 1856, and was the eldest son of John Kline.[2]
He worked as an assistant blacksmith and shoeing forge in Ballarat, then undertook an apprenticeship in the bakery trade.
In 1893 he installed a patented 'Bailey-Baker Continuous Baking Oven'.[3] Kline manufactured a variety of baked products including wedding cakes, malt bread, wheaten-meal bread, vienna bread, scones, biscuits and rusks. Pastry of all kinds was made and forwarded to all parts of the colony.[4]
Kline's specialty was malt bread for which he bought the patent rights to manufacture in Ballarat from its inventor - Mr Montgomery of Scotland.
Site
Kline established his bakery in Victoria Street in 1884. It soon became necessary to extend his premises.
He was a baker, caterer, pastrycook and confectioner who in 1893 was operating from two premises in Ballarat: one situated at 95-99 Victoria Street, Ballarat East (est. 1884), and the other at 9 Sturt Street (est. 1889).[5]

In 1902 he was elected Mayor of Ballarat East.
