26 April1877 at Soldiers Hill, Ballarat. He was taught Electricity and Magnetism by Henry Sutton at the Ballarat School of Mines and became an Associate of that school. He later taught the subject at his old school. He died in 1963.[1].
History
Sutherland was Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Ballarat School of Mines between 25 March 1898 and 16 May 1945.[2]. In 1915-17 he was a member of the Ballarat Science and Field Naturalists Club.[3]

Sutherland was involved with pioneer X-Rays at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1896.
