John Maguire
History
John Maguire was born in Bowenvale, Victoria, Australia, 17 May 1896 and he attended Timor State School. John Maquire was a postal officer before he enlisted:9 August 1915, Melbourne, Victoria, he was killed in action in Belgium, 4 October 1917, aged 21 years old, no known grave. His last rank was Lieutenant for the 8th Infantry Battalion. [1]
On Thursday 2nd December 1915, there was a farewell the citizens of Bowenvale to Sergeant J. Maguire in the Public Hall, and the high esteem in which the departing soldier is held by all who knew him, a presentation was made by the chair-man, and Sergeant Maguire very suitably responded and thanked them all for the kind present. Sergeant Maguire was also presented with a watch guard and gold cross from the members of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. [2]
