History

John Smith was originally from England, and initially lived at Geelong.[1] He was a gold miner at Black Hill, Ballarat in 1851.[2] John and the two men he shared a claim with found gold on 1849, but hid the discovery and went to Geelong to get the women and children Before they got back, the first discovery of payable gold was declared on 01 July 1951.[3]

They are buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery.[4]

John Smith was married to Frances Rebecca Gardener,[5], who was one of the first two white women on the goldfields.
