History

John Trewheela Tippett was born on 25 October 1835 at Relubbus in Cornwall, the son of Thomas and Christiana Tippett. John joined his father and brother working in American coal mines before sailing to Australia aged 21. He joined his Trethowan cousins at Newlyn, Victoria. They had selected land at Scrub Hill, and John's first job was to fence the 'Swamp Paddock' or the boundary between the Scrub Hill and Trethowans. He worked there until he could purchase his own threshing machine and steam engine.[1]

He died on 01 May 1914.

Obituary

OBITUARY MR JOHN TIPPETT. Our Rocky Lead correspondent writes: Mr John Tippett, of Scrub Hill, breathed his last at 8 a.m. on Friday. The deceased, who was 79 years of age, had enjoyed excellent health until about a week ago, when medical aid was called in, but it was not anticipated that the end was so near. Mr Tippett was one of the sturdy band of pioneers who materially assisted to make Victoria what it is today. He was a native of Penzance, Cornwall, and in his early days worked in the mines there. As a lad he, with his father, emigrated to America where he worked in the coal mines, and from there he returned and came to Victoria, and after working for some time at Drysdale came to Scrub Hill, Dean, where he has lived for about 56 years. Soon after his arrival in Dean he acquired the land that he had been employed to clear, and thenceforward started on a successful career as a leading farmer and breeder of Shorthorn cattle and Clydesdale horses, in both of which lines, being a keen judge and shrewd businessman, he was highly successful in both show rings and in the market. He was also of a very mechanical turn, and for many years ran a threshing machine worked by a traction engine, which he drove through Ballarat before the advent of the railways. The deceased was a very liberal man, of great force of character, and sterling honesty and integrity, and was highly respected by a wide circle of friends. He leaves a family of five sons, viz., Messrs Gilbert, Arthur, and Albert of Dean: Mr J. Tippett, of Ronaldson Bros. and Tippett, Ballarat, and Cr W. Tippett. of Waubra, and one daughter, Mrs F. Carter. of Dean. The remains will be interred in the Creswick Cemetery on Sunday.[2]
