Notes
The following possibly relates to Joseph Berriman's operation:
- Among the industries successfully started at Ballarat may be mentioned that of the manufacture of hay rope, 'The plant consists of six spinning machines; and the premises cover an area of about an acre. The rope is made of a tough kind of grass, gathered within a radius of about twenty miles of Ballarat ; and three men with horses and wagons are constantly employed in gathering it, and carting it, to the factory. The Manufacturing process is somewhat simple; and, after being spun, the rope is made into balls, and is then ready for market. The rope is used chiefly in connection with foundries, for pipe making, &c. ; and there is a good sale for it.[79]
