Mary Humphry Spiers, born Mary Pollock, was the mother of John Pollock Spiers.
Mary Pollock married Robert Hunter Spiers in Scotland. Their son, John Pollock Spiers, was born there c.1855.. The family emigrated from Scotland at the end of 1855. There is a record of them arriving as assisted migrants in Melbourne on the "Mermaid", and then going straight to Launceston on the "Femlia(?)" arriving on February 26, 1856. They were among a group of Scots sponsored by A. Learmonth. John established Spier's Bakery at Learmonth, and later was elected to the Victorian Parliament.
Mary died in Ballarat on 24 April 1915:
SPIERS On the 24th April, at 420 Ascot street south, Ballarat, Mary Humphry Spiers, widow of the late Robert Hunter Spiers, of Miner Rest; in her 81st year. By request, no flowers Peace, perfect peace.
