The first school at Moliagul dates back to 1859, the school was a short distance north of the Mt Moliagul Hotel and a little east of the St Arnaud Road. The wooden building had a canvas roof and eight foot high walls, lined with paper and had a softwood timber. The school opened in December 1861 and in the first two years 36 children attended the school. In February 1863, the school moved to a larger nearby building, which had been the Methodist Chapel built during the goldrush, this was a wooden building with a shingled roof and became known as Common School number 165. The present school was gazette in February 1871 and tenders called for a brick school closed October 1871. Thomas Flynn took charge of the Moliagul School, January 1871 and stayed until 1883. During 1876, the school grounds were planted with native and other shrubs, the school remained until 1970, when the school was unstaffed. [2]
