Origin of the name

Also known as Greenhill.

History

Mount Helen is a suburb of Ballarat situated north of Buninyong, and is 10 kilometres from Ballarat Central. Canadian Creek flows norh to south through Mt Helen.

Mount Helen once had its own railway station on the Buninyong railway line but the station closed to passengers in 1930.

A freshwater spring is located on the corner of Gear Avenue and Chancellor Drive, and connects into Canadian Creek.

George Dean, settled at Greenhill in 1871. His daughter Elizabeth married neighbour John Latta, the George Downing and the family ran the farm that later becaome the Federation Uinversity Mt Helen Campus.
