Background

The Neil Street Methodist Church memorial was created by F. W. Commons. It is located outside the entrnce to the church, and comprises three brass tablets set in marble. The memorial was unveiled on the diamond Jubilee of the church in 1921. It includes the phrase:

FIDELIS USQUE AD MORTEM (Faithful Unto Death)
To the Glory of God IN Honour OF THE MEN OF THIS Church WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-19.
Duty nobly done. Brass tablets set in marble outside the main entrance.


...a dedication service in honor of the 32 gallant men of the church and school who gave their lives in the great war will be held, at which Senator H. E. Elliott, B.A., LL.M., will give an address, and who will perform the ceremony of unveiling the memorial, which is erected in a recess of the church facing Macarthur street, and which will serve for all time as a reminder of heroic and unstinting service. The Mayor and City councillors, member's of the Ballarat Soldiers, and Sailors’ Association, Soldiers’ Fathers’ Association, Will be present. The Ballarat and District Scouts, under Com missioner F. Rogerson, will act as a guard of honor to Brigadier-General Elliott-. The memorial is of extreme simplicity and beauty, and was designed and built by Messrs F. W. Commons and Son, of Creswick road, Ballarat. ...[1]
