History
The initial shaft was dug in 1857 to work the washdirt from the Milkmaid Lead. After a rich quartz reef was found a large battery, the largest in Ballarat, was erected. The mine changed hands several times and also had several name changes: Burra (1863), Cosmopolitan (1865), Burra Burra (1868), Kohinoor (1874), New Kohinoor (1876).[2]
The mine closed in 1911 with a shaft 1,293 feet in depth.[3]
