Background
The New York Bakery was built for German John Reid. Later Reid's Coffee Palace was built on the site beside the Ballarat Railway Station in Lydiard Street North.[1] Before baking in Ballarat John Reid was in the baking trade in New York, and in 1855 brought his techniques to the Victorian goldfields to feed the hordes of hungry miners.[2]
The remnant brick scotch ovens from the New York Bakery are still in place.
The People
- NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that the partnership hitherto existing between John Reid and John Conrad Weickhardt, carrying on business as bakers, at the New York Bakery, on the Main Road, Ballarat, was this day dissolved by mutual consent. The business in future will be carried on by John Reid, who will receive and pay all moneys due and owing to and by the late firm.
