North Woah Hawp Mine

History

Located in Regent Gully on the Western side of Geelong Road this mine had a 1,375 foot shaft and took 127,563 ounces of gold from the earth. The North Woah Hawp was owned by a number of Melbourne Chinese merchants. All the miners were Chinese except for the manager, Edward Hardy.

This mine closed in 1918.

MINERS' WAGES. - BALLARAT EAST MINES. - BALLARAT, Friday.-The directors of the New Normanby, North Woah Hawp, and Last Chance mines at Ballarat East to- day considered the position arising out of the increase in miners' wages. The three companies have been on the call list for some time, and the extra wages will add to the expenditure. It was decided to have as much work as possible done on contract, while tributes will be made available. Managers will be directed to use economy in expenditure. Work will be resumed on Tuesday, but several days will elapse before the water is out of the bottom level at the New Normanby and the North Woah Hawp.
