History

August (Otto) Edward Steinkraus was born in Graudenz, West Prussia in 1848 to Johann Steinkraus and Caroline (Mielke). He arrived in Melbourne at the age of 33, on board the Catania, arriving in Melbourne in July 1883.[1]

German born August (Otto) Edward Steinkraus owned a pottery that later became the Eureka Terracotta and Tile Company. Otto operated a pottery at Lal Lal from 1896 until 1902[2], selling his products from the back of a long-shafted cart, pulled by a baldy-faced horse. His products included teapots, jugs, large milk-settling dishes for skimming clotted cream. His pottery was produced from plastic clays dug from local pits and thrown on a potter's wheel. The bisque was put into wood-fired kilns set up near the site of the Eureka Stockade. When fired it became a reddish-brown colour.[3]

Otto Steinkraus and his wife and sisters lived in a house at Lal Lal (later occupied by Ted Enwright).[4]
