Percy E. Coltman
History
Percy Edgar Coltman was born in Ballarat. Percy and his brother Charles Stanley Coltman were educated at Macarthur Street State School, Grenville College in Ballarat, and the Ballarat School of Mines. The brothers had moved to Sydney to further their careers when they enlisted for service.
Legacy
Coltman enlisted for service during World War One at Kensington, New South Wales, and his service recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour. He was killed in action on 05 August 1916.
Percy Coltman's name is listed in the Ballarat School of Mines Honor Roll. A member of the 22nd Battalion, he was killed in action[1] during an attack on Pozieres Ridge near Mouquet Farm on 05 August 1916 aged 44 years. Percy along with Sergeant Shields and Sergeant Wilson were attacking a German position on the OG2 trenches. Percy had a "jam tin bomb" and the other two men had a bag of mills grenades when a shell exploded nearby killing all three men. Percy has no known grave. [2]
Coltman Place in the Ballarat suburb of Lucas was named after C. Stanley Coltman (tree 1357) and Percy E. Coltman (tree 1359).[3]

Obituary
- SERGEANT PERCY E. COLTMAN.
- Official word was yesterday received by Mr W. Coltman, J.P., of Ballarat, to the effect that his third son, Sergeant Percy Edgar Coltman, had been killed in action in France, on August 5th. Sergeant Coltman was a member of the 22nd Battallon, attached to the 6th Brigade.
- He took part in the fighting at Gallipoli where he spent some four months, and was also present at the evacuation. After service in Egypt. Sergeant Coltman was transferred to France A native of Ballarat. He was well known and highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. In his early youth, Sergeant Coltman was an employee of the local branch of the City of Melbourne Bank. From Ballarat he went to Africa to take up responsible position in the Standard Bank, Johannesburg. Subsequently he returned to Australia, having received the important charge of managing direcrtor of a large engineering establish in Sydney, where he enlisted. About 43 years of age, Sergeant Coltman leaves a widow and three children, resident in South Yarra. Much sympthy will be extended to them in their and bereavement.[4]
