The Phoenix Brewery was established in 1857 at Warrenheip by James Coglan.
Background
History
On 24 October 1860 the company announced in The Star that Mr Alexander Magill had joined the firm and would subsequently trade as Magill & Coghlan. [1]

| ‘MAGILL & COGHLAN beg leave to inform their numerous friends and customers that Mr Alexander Magill has joined their firm, and the business will in future be carried on under the style and title of Magills & Coghlan. The late firm takes this opportunity to thank their customers for the liberal share of patronage bestowed on them hitherto, and the indulgence for frequent disappointments. Their concern is now being very much enlarged, and in future they can with confidence promise punctual delivery of all ale ordered. Notwithstanding the high price of malt and hops, the character of their ale shall be strictly maintained. 24th October, 1860.’ [2] |
The Brewery was amalgamated with the Royal Standard Brewery in 1895 to become the Ballarat Brewing Company. The Phoenix Brewery continued to operate independently until it was closed in 1911.[3]
