Etymology

It is thought that the name was derived from an Aboriginal word meaning curlew.[1]

History

Piggoreet is a small gold mining town south-west of Ballarat, near Linton. Gold was found at Piggoreet at a place called The Devil's Kitchen in 1852.

Governance

Piggoreet was part of the Wardy Yallock-Smythesdale gold-mining area, which included Linton, Happy Valley, Scarsdale and Cape Clear.[2]

Geography and climate

Pigoreet is located above a gorge known as the Devil's Kitchen.

There was a branch of the Union Bank at Piggoreet. The manager at one time was Henry Curwen-Walker.[3]
