History

Richard Belford was born in January 1824 at Londonderry, Ireland. He migrated to New South Wales with his parents, arriving on 03 October 1838, and returning to Ireland in 1846.

Migrated to Melbourne at age 24.

Editor and co-owner of The Star. (<29/09/1856>) Co-ownership ended 1 July 1858 after a civil court case.[1]

Elected as the inaugural Commanding Officer of the Ballarat Volunteer Rifle Regiment (1858 – 59).[2]

Richard Belford died of complications of chronic bronchitis[5] on 28 April 1865 in his home on Adelaide Street, Brisbane.[6] He is buried in the Paddington Cemetery in 1865. His body was exhumed from Paddington in May 1913 and was reburied in Toowong Cemetery. His headstone was also removed to Toowong.[7]

Legacy

As Chairman of the Ballarat East Municipal Council was a member of the group that incorporated the Ballarat Town Library.
