Richard Grenfell
Richard Grenfell served with the AIF during World War One.
History

Grenfell was born in Tourello c1882, Victoria, the son of Richard Grenfell. He had attended the Tourello State School. He was working as a farmer when he enlisted in the AIF, 59th Battalion, in 1915. He arrived in Suez in May 1916. In August 1916, he joined the battalion in France. He attended a month training course in grenades during October 1916, and rejoined his unit at the end of the month. He died from wounds recieved in action on the 3 November 1916. He was buried in the Thistle Dump Cemetery, Plot 1, Row E, Grave 10.[1]
From the Clunes Guardian and Gazette, November 1916:
"A cable was received by the relatives last week that Private Richard Grenfell, son of Mr. Richard Grenfell of Tourello, had been killed in action in France. The deceased was a very popular young man, and well known throughout the district. He was a member of the Clunes Gun Club and a good shot. He was also, a good all round cricketer."[2]
Legacy
His World War One service is recognised on the Tourello State School Roll of Honour.[3]
