Background

Building basalt used for Ballarat buildings was quarried from Rowsell's.[1]

In 1875 Mr Rowsell opened a quarry in Ripon Street, Ballarat.[2]

We have considered the tenders of Mr Rowsell for improvements at Caledonian channel, and recommend that the work be done at sche dule prices to the extent of £500 —Adopted. [3]

Contractor J. Rowsell has started his contract for the construction of stone wall at Yarrowee Creek, near the Woollen Mills. Good progress is being made with the culvert in Peel street north; the road is now open for traffic.[4]
