The Royal Standard Hotel was a hotel in Linton, Victoria, <1860-1920>.

Background

The hotel was sold in 1920 as a delicensed hotel:

DELICENSED HOTEL CLOSED. The Royal Standard Hotel at the corner of Sussex and Clyde streets, having been delicensed, was sold on Wednesday last by Messrs Early and Walker, acting under instructions from Mr J. Shepherd, trustee of the estate, of the late T. Trevarrow. The buildings comprising hotel, billiard room, stables and sheds, with the block of land on which they stand, were bought by Mr J. H. Barr, draper, of Linton, for the sum of £230, who also bought the billiard table. The hotel furniture and other effects wore also sold at satisfactory prices.[1]

The hotel was at Linton, on the corner of Sussex and Clyde streets.[2][1]

History

Community Involvement

In 1860 the hotel was used a meeting venue for residents of Surface Hill, who wanted the government to release land for sale in the area.[3]

In July 1868 the hotel was the venue for the ordinary general meeting of the Atlas and Linton Park Freehold Company.[4]

In October 1873 the hotel was the venue for a meeting of the Anderson's Freehold Company.[5]

In January 1890 the hotel was the venue for a meeting of the Ballarat officers and delegates of the Ancient Order of Foresters. The Ballarat Star reported:

A banquet was provided by the hostess, Mrs Trevorrow, and the tables were very prettily decorated with flowers, etc., and well laden with edibles of a choice description.[6]

The People

  • Before 1865 the publican was Mrs. R Harrison.[7]
  • In February 1865 the publican's license was transferred to Stephen Trestrail.[7] Trestrail died in July 1865.[8]
  • From at least October 1873 to December 1875 the publican was E. Trestrail.[5][9]
  • From at least December 1877 to his death on 31 May 1884, the publican was Thomas Trevorrow.[10][11][2]
  • Mary Jane Trevorrow was publican in April 1890.[12]
  • In 1919 at the delicensing hearings, the publican was named as James Godden, and the owner, Mrs. Trevarrow.[13]
