History

BOOTMAKERS’ STRIKE AT BALLARAT
BALLARAT, WEDNESDAY.
About twenty journeymen bootmakers were withdrawn from the factory of Mr. S. Book, boot manufacturer, by the Bootmakers’ Union to-day, and this action will result in nearly as many girls and apprentices being thrown out of employment. Mr. Book states that the main issue of the dispute which has arisen could be easily settled it the men would consent to work on wages. The men, on the other hand, allege that Mr. Book is endeavouring to bring about a reduction of 10 per cent, on statement prices. The grievance is an old one, and Mr. Book expresses a determination to see it out on this occasion.[2]
