Smythesdale
Smythesdale is a town on the banks of Smythes Creek, Victoria. It is on the Glenelg Highway bewteen Ballarat and Skipton.
In 1878 Smythesdale boasted a public court, court of mines, mining survey and registry, sub-treasury, post office, town hall, telegraph office, bank, and lock-up.[1] The school had 350 children in attendance, and there were five places of worship. [2]
In 1878 the Borough of Smythesdale had a population of 600 with 108 ratepayers on the roll. [3]

Communications
The Telegraph Office at Smythesdale opened for business on Thursday, 18 June, 1863:
Mr Bechervaise, telegraph master, informs us that on Thursday the Electric Telegraph station at Smythesdale was opened to the public. The rates of charges from Ballarat are the same as to Clunes, Creswick, and Beaufort.[14]
Sport
There was a cricket club in existence in 1859, and a second club was being formed.[15]
