Star of the East Quartz Gold Mine
History
The Star of the East No. 1 started sinking in 1880, under the management of W. Hicks. [1]
Between 1886 and 1910 the 100 head stamper crushed 508,539 tons of rock. It closed in 1910 after reaching a depth of 3172 feet and paying 284,400 pounds in dividends.
The water at this mine was hot when it reached the surface. For every 33 feet of depth the water temperature increased by one degree F. [2]
Site
The Star of the East was a quartz mine located around Orion Street and Picton Street, Sebastopol.
The home for the Mine Manager of the Star of the East No. 1. was situated at the corner of Picton Street and Orion Street, Sebastopol. [3]
Captain Hicks was manager of the Star of the East No. I. [4]
