Background
History
- This company) recently caused some excitement in the share market by the striking of a new run of gold in their northern workings. The company was formed in January, 1878, and the first sod of the shaft was turned by Mr D. Fitzpatrick on the 13th of January in the same year. The first shaft was lost in a bad drift, but nothing daunted, a new one was commenced at once, and successfully bottomed. The shaft was opened at various levels, and the old Bakery Hill gutter driven into; nothing was discovered but old ground. The company had up to this time worked their mine with a whim, but the shaft was now too deep for that appliance and a plant was erected which carried them down to a depth of 150ft. The shaft being a small one, 6ft x 3ft, sinking was found difficult, as there was a large quantity of water. The company's success was not at all times reassuring and the mine had principally to be worked on tribute. The first dividend was paid in July, 1881, and the 13th and last to date on the 2nd June, 1885. The capital called up is £10,000. In May, 1883, it became necessary to look for a site to sink a new shaft further south, and, having fixed upon it, work was commenced.
- The position selected created such an uproar among the business people and others in Ballarat East that the influence of the Government was invoked, and sinking stopped. The company purchased a freehold allotment on which was erected the old Yarrowee Hotel. ...[1]
