Sydney Prew
History
Sydney Prew was a laborer before enrolling in the Australian Imperial Army, 7 Infantry Battalion - 1 to 8 Reinforcements, service number 1167, on the 25th September 1914, aged 21 years. He was a Lance Corporal 10th August 1916 to 26th October 1916, Corporal from the 27th October 1916 to the 15th October 1917, Acting Sargent 1th October 1917 to the 28th February 1918 and became Captain on the 1st March 1918.
He embarked from Australia on the 22nd December 1914 on the HMAT Themistocles A32, fought in the Gallipoli campaign wounded in action 14th May 1918, (bullet to the right hip),he returned to Australia from Italy 8th October 1918. he was discharged at Melbourne 2nd December 1918.
He was awarded the 1914/15 Star Medal, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. He passed away at Ballarat on the 10th January 1923. [1]
