History

Thomas Francis (Frank) Cahir was born at Yendon[1] in 1899. The family moved to Sheep Hills and Rainbow. Frank was apprenticed to a Warracknabeal pharmacist, finishing his four year term in 1912. He then went to Melbourne, and almost completed the requirements at the Melbourne College of Pharmacy when war broke out.[2]

He enlisted for service during World War One on 18 August 1914 at the age of 24, serving with the 2nd Field Ambulance, later transferring into the 9th Field Ambulance. Frank Cahir (063) gave his mother, Mrs T Carr of Rainbow, as his next of kin. He was among the first ANZACs at Gallipoli, and received a Military Medal for courage under fire. He received a DSM in 1918. At the completion of World War One Staff Sergeant Cahir served with the Australian Graves Service[3] from 01 September 1919. He appears to have worked at Villers Bretonneux, France.[4]

Frank Cahir returned to Australia in 1921 on the Demosthenes. Probably suffering from PTSD Frank Cahir suicided on 22 May 1928, leaving a widow and three sons. [5]
