Thomas Flintoff

Background
According to the 1866 Burgess Roll of Ballarat Thomas Flintoff was a photographer with a shop in Sturt Street.
History
Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne c1809, he studied art in England and Munich.[1]
Flintoff and one of his sons sought fortune on the Californian goldfields. In early 1853 he left San Francisco for Victoria, [2] arriving in Australia in 1854.
By 1856 Thomas Flintoff had settled at Ballarat were he set up as a painter and photographer, setting up the Tyne-side Photographic Studio in 1856. He moved to Sturt Street in 1860, with fire destroying his studio in 1868. New rooms were set up in Bridge Street. He continued to work in Ballarat until 1872, [3] .[4] when he moved to Melbourne. By 1889 Flintoff was working from 135 Swanston Street, Melbourne. [5]
Flintoff died on 05 October 1891 one at his home at 196 Berkely Street, Carlton.[6]

In 1860 Thomas Flintoff had a studio at 64 Main Road, Ballarat East.[7]
In 1865 Flintoff's Tyne Side Photographic Gallery was in Sturt Street opposite the Ballarat Star office. [8] at that time he described himself as a portrait painter and a photographer.
