Probably the most enjoyable social evenings ever spent at Dry Diggings took place in the State School on Friday last, when Privates George Ind, John Shimmin, Thomas Pedretti, Harold Poulter and Richard Powell, who have enlisted and will shortly go to the front, were made the recipients of pocket wallets, with inscribed silver shields, from residents in the locality. There were a large number of ladies present, many having travelled a considerable distance in order to bid farewell and wish God Speed to the brave departing soldiers. Cr W. Jayes introduced the President of the Glenlyon Shire, Cr James Bolton, J.P., who made the presentations at the close of a suitable speech. Brief speeches were made by Crs Jayes, MacDonald and Robertson, Mr James Quine (the secretary to the committee who inaugurated the affair), and Recruiting-sergeant McDonald. The evening concluded with a dance, in which old and young participated.
