Obituary

An Old Colonist.
Mr. Townsend M'Dermott, of Ballarat, the "Father of the Victorian bar" and one of the oldest practising barristers in the Empire,, recently celebrated his 86th birthday. Last week Mr. M'Dermott, who on more than one occasion acted as junior , to the great Daniel O'Connell in the courts of Dublin, received a birthday present from the legal profession of Bendigo in the shape of a brief with a cheque for £5 5s attached. Mr. M'Dermott, who was one of the leading barristers engaged in the celebrated mining law suit of Learmonth v. Bailey and others, drew handsome fees for his services in that historic case. At the opening of the suit it was stated that he had 3000 guineas marked on his brief.[1]
