UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.
The students of University College introduced an innovation into their usual Christmas celebrations this year by holding a Christmas tree festival at the college on Friday night last in aid of the funds of the Orphan Asylum. The schoolroom had been decorated most extensively with the college colors (black and yellow), flags and evergreens, Chinese lanterns and fairy lamps, and presented a very pretty sight. The Christmas tree was managed by Mrs C. W. Wilson, who had for her assistants Misses Mabel Sides, Nellie King, Jessie Mitchell, Fanny Trethowan and Violet Glenny. The flower stall was under Miss Gribble, assisted by Misses Eva and Florrie Reeves, Amy Allan, Ethel Trevor, and Florrie Lake land. Miss Lizzie Allan superintended the refreshments, her helpers being Mr J. King and Misses Ethel Windram, Sophie Hart, Pauline Lakeland, Nellie Newman, Laura Nicholls, and Ethel Munro. The schoolroom was crowded with visitors, and very good business was done at all the stalls, after proceedings had been formally opened by the Mayor of Ballarat East. The boys and girls all worked hard to make the affair a great success, and by their efforts the funds of the Orphan Asylum will benefit to the extant of about £l0 which will doubtless be welcomed as a seasonable Christmas box by the treasurer. Daring the evening a concert was given by the pupils and their friends, amongst the performers being— Miss Mabel Sides, piano solo: Miss Remfry, piano solo (Mattey’s waltz); Miss B. Treloar; recitation, “The pride of Battery B:” Mr M. Madden, recitation; and Mr E. Raxtan, “The Lost Child.”[4]

A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT.
TO THE EDITOR.
SIR, In regard to the paragraph in to day’s issue with reference to the success of Mr W. J. Geer, I may mention that in 1895 Mr Geer came to University College, and at the end of that year passed matric., including Greek and honors in Latin, and during the following year studied under my direction for the Cusack-Russell scholarship, in which classics play the most important part, and which Mr Geer duly carried off. During this same year Mr Geer acted as junior master for the University College, and his old pupils and schoolmates will join with me in congratulating him on his successful finish of a brilliant scholastic career.
—Yours, &c., Charles W. WILSON, B.A. University College, Ballarat, 19th December, 1898.[5]
