William N. Longhurst
William Nicholas Longhurst was a baker in Ballarat. Victoria, 1867-1902.
In 1867 Longhurst commenced business in the Caledonian Bakery in Seymour Cresecent, which he purchased from Mr McKay. Five years later the business had grown to the extent that he purchased a property on the corner of Mair and Yuille Streets, shortly after changing the name to the Criterion Bakery. In 1938 it was known as Longhurst and Sons Pty. Ltd. Criterion Bread Factory.[1]
History
Longhurst was born in Kent, England, c.1835, and arrived in Victoria in 1852. The following year he moved to Ballarat and was a resident there until the time of his death in 1902. In 1865 he married Phoebe Gibson.[2] They had ten children.
At the time of his death his business was purchased by his son W. E. Longhurst.[3]
From the newspapers, April 1902:
"Mr. W. N. Longhurst, J.P., died on Sunday, after a short illness, at the age of 67. The deceased sat on the bench at the City Court on Wednesday."[4]
