History

William (Bill) Baden Wheeler was born in April 1900, died December 1971.[1] He was a keen golfer and a yachtsman owning and racing a 25 foot yacht ‘Acrospire’ on Lake Wendouree. [2]

He was apprenticed as a boilermaker at the Cowley's Eureka Ironworks at age 14, became a fitter and turner, then he studied draughtsmanship and became works manager in 1937. Wheeler was general manager of Cowley's Eureka Ironworks from 1947/1948, after the death of the former manager, his brother-in-law Bevan A. John. As an engineering firm Cowleys made boilers, cement lined steel pipes,(eg the Swan River Reservoir), Cowley steam roller, Pattern shop before and during World War Two, direct supply milking machines, plus other large projects. In the early 1960s Cowley's was taken over by Rocla Pipes Ltd.[3]
