William E. Kiel
History
William Ernest KIEL (SN 5514) lived at ‘Natal’ in Lydiard Street (near corner Walker St & Lydiard Sts) andf worked as a salesman before joining the AIF during World War One. He embarked from Australia as a 21 year old to serve with the Australian Army Medical Corps. He did serve with distinction, being awarded the Military Medal, his citation reading 'for conspicuous gallantry under fire. Has acted as "runner" on all occasions during which the bearer division of the ambulance has been in action. During the recent advance from February 25th to March 3rd, 1917, this N.C.O. carried messages with great resoluteness and dash, often under very heavy shell fire.'[1]
William Kiel returned to Australia in May 1919. [2]
Legacy
The World War One service of William E. Kiel recognised on the Ballarat Avenue of Honour.
