Background
Although originally trained as a bricklayer, William Ellis became a photographer and is said to have been Ballarat’s first.[1]
William Frank Ellis was a photographer at Ballarat from 1854-1860 at the Red Hill Photographic Rooms. [2]
History
William Ellis was a English born professional photographer and builder. He arrived in Victorian in 1853 and worked as a bricklayer in Melbourne before taking up photography. He moved to Ballarat in 1854 becoming the first resident photographer when he set up the Red Hill Photographic Rooms.[3]
